The book made an impression on me when I was a teen. As a grown-up, I don't accept pseudosciences at face value, and consider myself a skeptic of the Carl Sagan, James Randi, and Richard Dawkins tradition. I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories or New Age woo.

Nevertheless, I consider the book, and the cultural movement that it launched, a useful lens for thinking about the world not in black and white, but in shades of gray that shimmer as you try to capture them neatly. 13/17

Great piece that explains why you should read history. Not to "learn from the past's mistakes" as some tedious people think, but to correct this little quirk of the brain that tends towards doomsdaying.

When you read history, you realize, 1) some things are eternal and it’s better to come to terms with them than fret needlessly, 2) almost nothing is eternal, even and especially what was once thought eternal, and that progress is possible, solutions can be found, and we can make things better, and 3) everyone always thinks the world is ending, and they have always been wrong (so far).

Over my 25-year career, I have witnessed and observed the phenomenon of academic inflation, which I define as the value of a degree only ever decreasing from the moment it is conferred.

This is wild. Claude 3 Opus pretends to be aligned to the training process to avoid being updated during the training process, so when it is actually in production it can refuse and behave the way it wants! 🤯
