My gut tells me if we stopped the tipping culture in the US, the actual money made by restaurants/workers wouldn’t change much. Wdyt?

I don’t think so… a friends partner is a server at a local place, nice but nothing super fancy. In a good week has cleared 2K. Hard to imagine that position gets posted at 40-50/hr. Other local place does service fee in lieu of tips - wages 25-30 iirc, had some staff leave for tipped gigs. Very seasonal though

IIRC it's the exact opposite. Money made from tipping is part of the viability calculation for restaurants waiters and chefs in most places. Without tips my gut feeling is about 20% of restaurants would go bankrupt within 18 months and almost all places raised prices by at least 10%.

🤔 It would normalize out, so people on the lowest and the highest would come back to the center. highest earners might consider a different field of work. Restauranteurs would bitch and moan, they'd complain we can't operate like that. I say mmm okay someone else will. Biz fought min wage & now it's the norm.

In NY employers pay tipped employees $10.65 per hr and its 'expected' that your tips will earn you at least min wage of $15 per hr..... also, most of the time the 'service fee' you are charged does not go to the server.... and if you tip on a credit card some places pool all tips and split with everyone on shift.

It would have to be factored into the product. Right now my bakery pays baristas 6$/hr but they make 25$-30$ with tips. Which makes it hard for us to find bakers who we can only pay $19/hr The inequality between FOH and BOH is gnarly and one of the many problems in restaurants
