In front of this shrine, at Tenryu Pond (locally known as Gourd Pond), it's believed that Izanagi performed a purification ritual. From this ritual, the three main deities of Sumiyoshi Shrine emerged. These deities are Sokotsutsu no Mikoto, Nakatsutsu no Mikoto, and Uwatsutsu no Mikoto. Interestingly, the sea once reached all the way to Tenryu Pond!
