Upcoming channel changes We're *previewing* some upcoming changes so people 1) can understand and 2) provide feedback. These changes are not launching yet. It will be a couple weeks. There will also be a bunch of communication to channel owners. After reading the entire doc, feel free to reply to with feedback or send me a DC. I've tried to answer a lot of common questions in the FAQ. https://warpcast.notion.site/Upcoming-channel-changes-1056a6c0c101800caee6ea8133f8f966

We're planning to bundle this with a bunch of other improvements to channels. But these are the big changes.

I would be interested in having a way to allow anyone to reply but only members to post. This would be a way to "vet" potential members – if they contribute to discussions, they can be invited to post top-level casts

Really dont like it, for reasons: It impedes community growth and will drive away new users. Most people will not come back a second time if their day-one vibe is that everything is a gated community they're not allowed into. What is going to keep them coming back if not welcoming communities? It will drive away current users who can no longer participate in communities they enjoyed. How are we expecting them to stick around after being kicked out of their fav groups? Having to vet every member is an insane amount of responsibility and work for a big channel that wants to be mostly open. Even with a full team of mods, it'll take a lot of work to make it feel open again. I love that talented artists show up and use /cryptoart on their first day. I love discovering them via the recent feed. How am I supposed to discover talented new users going forward? This is going to hurt WC/FC adoption and retention of qDAUs.

this is almost exactly the way i have /vip set up anyways except "membership" is just an automated tokengate. will this still be an option? (through automod if not through warpcast)

Excited about this evolution of channels! – Would love to easily be able to see a list of channel members in Warpcast, especially highlighting fellow members that I don't follow yet (opportunity for new friends) – Would love for existing members to be able to nominate new members (still an inbox for mods but should be much more focused and manageable) + tracking nominations for social accountability and context – Would love to be able to invite net-new Farcaster users directly to my channel as a member via a streamlined onboarding flow – Sad that the narrowcasting changes didn't make the cut, would rather get to the end of my feed each day in a healthy way that endless scroll (but understand that that's opposed to business interests) – Still would love for some way to not see casts that are in channels I don't follow (whether from someone I'm following or not), one of my biggest annoyances with the current feed (and muting = whack-a-mole)

Good changes! Small question/suggestion: guessing devs will want a way of generating unique invite links that can only be used once so membership can be unlocked via whatever system they create. Will that be possible?

Can channel owners create a setting where for example users that hold a particular amount of FT can automatically join a channel?

Have you considered a setting where only members cast in the channel but anyone can reply?

It’s cool to have memberships, but this just add friction to new comers. I’ve invited several friends and the best feature they find is channels, because it is a great way to find content, get seen, and make friends… but how will a new comer make friends around here if they find all channels gated?

Why not just let the channel owner decide if they want to make it invite-only? What is the reasoning for making it default invite-only for everyone?

Thanks @dwr.eth — would you consider lowering the barrier to membership in some way so that potential members have a systematic way to be onboarded, and the burden isn’t on moderators to send out invites? E.g. potential members could apply via casting into the channel. The cast could appear in a pending, accepted, or denied state, visible to the cast author and moderators. This might enable potential members to demonstrate an understanding of channel rules, content quality, and intent to actually cast, so moderators could make an easy decision while enabling the channel to grow with less friction.

If I invite someone to my channel, do they automatically become a member or do they have to accept the invitation? If the latter, will there be APIs for that too, and can they be triggered using Signers?

ohh this is an interesting direction to take channels in! very curious to see more! how do you envision that channel mods will connect with people who they can invite? do you expect that mods will know the members already beforehand?

I'm fine with these changes, will help build proper communities. Just one question. it says only members can cast. does that mean only channel members can reply to a cast in a channel? i feel replies should be open to everyone.

I’m really interested in seeing what this means for DAU for Farcaster. Concerned about number 2 but I guess we would see how it goes.

some of this sounds really good, especially an unified feed, but it also sounds like it would break some of the automod rules and settings currently possible? being able to automatically remove casts that don't pass a certain filter, i.e. key words such as "fred again" or a certain word length, are pretty powerful moderation tools

Only thing that wasn't clear to me was the purpose of following a channel now if you're not a member. Do you have to follow in order to read?

Overall feedback is that I think this is a step in the right direction, channels will have way stronger signal and focus. Is there consideration in the future between different write levels for root casts vs replies? i.e. /fc-updates can be root casted by mods only, replies open to members or even public
