Upcoming channel changes

We're *previewing* some upcoming changes so people 1) can understand and 2) provide feedback.

These changes are not launching yet. It will be a couple weeks. There will also be a bunch of communication to channel owners.

It’s cool to have memberships, but this just add friction to new comers. I’ve invited several friends and the best feature they find is channels, because it is a great way to find content, get seen, and make friends… but how will a new comer make friends around here if they find all channels gated?

That’s not easy for the average user, which is the audience for influencers/KOLs/etc, and they won’t stay if they don’t have an audience. The audience won’t stay if they need to work to find content, most people are lazy af 😆 

The algo pushes the same people everyday and the lack of a power badge pushes new people to the bottom, it feels like you’re getting punished for not being interesting enough everyday, every hour, with every cast and for everyone. It’s not fud ser, just my two cents.

It’s getting harder for bots and average people alike.

Personally I’ll be sad if WC would become just for influencers to influence each other :/

Cast and reply to people outside of channels.

We've tried the open channel model for a year and it doesn't work well enough. So we're trying a new direction.

yeah, I get subreddits mentioned all the time. I don't think channels should just copy all the features tho, they need to be a new interesting thing...

Yeah second this. Maybe it would be a good idea to add something similar to hashtags to at least make nonchannel casts more visible and then treat channels more like subreddits or Discord groups which are more high functioning/feature rich.

Up to this point, channels have been little more than glorified hashtags, and they need more utility to stay relevant. With that said, it'd be good to have a low key way for non channlers to still find each other and for mods to find potential members.
