@dwr.eth , could you elaborate on why or point to a resource? I get that people here in the comments say OKRs are a distraction from your primary goal — but that sounds like people are just choosing the wrong OKR… Anyone else who has some thoughts on this, feel free to jump in.

YES and beyond early-stage. How old/big was Coinbase when OKRs were introduced? Was it well after achieving PMF? There's no room 'inside the tornado' for OKRs.

OKRs are usually a bad choice no matter the size of business unless the metrics are concrete and un-gameable. And if you've figured out the latter, congrats. Startups should focus on a primary metric (DAU, MRR, etc), maybe two (periodic retention, churn), and it should be intrinsically related to determining PMF

💯 - I don't even really do OKRs at Google anymore. Added too much overhead. Although now I use Bard to wordsmith my thoughts into OKS, expectations or whatever management overhead there is.

Preach. OKRs as advice are another way of other people sounding experienced without having skin in the game and understanding the structural challenges of the business they’re dealing with.

thats really interesting. We only started OKRs around 400 employees, series E, $50mil ARR- They were never announced, they just kind of started happening. Before that, very lax, even for the sales team. Just build pipeline and hit your number.

If you ask me it’s just confusing only the top level understands the essence of it test all are just sitting in procrastinated mode without much interest in it. And for most part most of them also do it wrong

agreed. i've noticed the okr obsession makes it hard to pivot based on new insights during the quarter—which is often the case, the system incentivizes outdated targets getting hit vs taking action to change direction based on the new info

Early stage companies should solely focus on getting pm-fit. Building a product and making customer happy. Tracking the WoW revenue should be all they need.
