Gross but practical question: how do you keep your external keyboard / mouse clean? I've tried isopropyl wipes and it doesn't seem that effective. I have the same keyboard at work and at home but the one at home feels 100x nicer since I use it so much less. Is it a lost cause?

Since it's mostly lipids, use warm dish soap. Alcohol isn't very good as a solvent for grease.

for keyboard: every month or so i take all the keycaps off and soak them in warm soapy water โ†’ then take them out โ†’ wipe them clean with a rag โ†’ put them back on the keyboard for mouse: wet a rag and wipe it down, then dry (you prob need more friction than wipes)

+ 1 part Bonners to 4 parts water in the foaming dispenser below + Clean with foam and dish sponge + Wipe off with damp rag when done scrubbing The above allows surface to get clean for me without being "sticky" and without smelling like something chemical (ps, I use this same solution to clean absolutely everything, including pots and pans. also only thing I wash my hands with. really like) https://a.co/d/d3TwncH https://a.co/d/bJTf6X4

Tbh cleaning keyboards is hard vv hard. And if it's a mechanical one then the only option is to remove all keys and clean it through. It's too much time taking.

Analog keyboard, remove keys once a month and clean. Also stop eating when you work.

Honestly, I just buy a new mouse every so often. Wipe down the keyboard, dust it a bit โ€” fine. But deep cleaning? No chance. I wash my hands a lot, mostly to keep the keyboard from getting too gross. But Iโ€™d rather spend a weekend messing with firewall settings than sit there scrubbing keycaps with a toothbrush. Some people clean to unwind. I debug OPNsense configs.

So Iโ€™ve actually never tried it but according to my own GIRL MATH you could try makeup remover wipes to remove dirt, oil, and grime. Followed by alcohol wipes to sanitize. Let me know if my calculations are accurate.

This thing has been a big quality of life improvement for my keyboard cruft. https://a.co/d/6nLgq32 It doesn't get everything 100% but it's handy enough to use every few days/weeks, and get most of it.

I use WOOSH occasionally but generally I take more caution to thoroughly wash my hands before touching the keyboard
