The cardinal sin to wanting build "another Silicon Valley" is to think of it as a money problem. Silicon Valley works because of: 1) unique historical circumstances as precondition 2) a reinforcing cultural feedback loop that took decades to develop Network effect as a moat. https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0xbca3715d

I totally agree, I don’t think “dump money into city to make new SV” is a winning strategy, it’s just a grift carousel. But I do believe that other cities have the potential, and simultaneously believe the glory days of SV are firmly in the past because the edge is gone — we now know that remote work _works_.

The most interesting 'counter SV' I've seen is EthDenver. Tens of thousands of people flying there from all over the world, without any prior network, VCs or anything else but Ethereum culture This is how tech hubs start, organically

It’s like trying to build another CBGB. Ecosystems and scenes never happen by design. Can only be organic / happenstance. Case in point - the failed attempts at building any kind of cultural impact through the multi-million dollar government funded Sydney Startup Hub.

The problem with programs like that is the Gov is incapable of granting awards in a fair or egalitarian way. Instead is based on insider relationships and kick-backs. There is a reason that the richest zip codes in the US are located near DC.

Not everything needs to be Silicon Valley. It’s important to spread opportunity.

You can build another Silicon Valley but you just need to start with a gold rush, universities and military bases all conveniently in that spot. Then give it 30-70 years

This is the most common thing I hear in Nashville. We’re so close to having all the pieces. “All we need is more capital.” NO! We need more founders. More innovation. More moonshots. Every aspiring tech hub is chasing proptech, fintech, healthtech, and then wondering why they can’t build something unique.

I used to be an advisor for the Entrepreneur Center in Nashville and that place has been a net benefit to the tech scene there. But I agree if the expectation is that you’ll get an SV equivalent is delusional.

It's also easy to fall into the trap that Silicon Valley is static - most didn't expect Nvidia to be minted as a trillion dollar SV company this year. Plus all the secret developments like the private VC-backed tech city! https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/sep/02/silicon-valley-elites-utopian-city-california

Nailed it. Even more fundamental: communities around a "cause" are never started from the top-down (i.e. investment, tax treatment, etc).
