if people very steeped in art say "sorry, that is not art" you should pay attention, because it is triggering enough that it made them defensive imo, art is about intent (did the creator make this to try and make someone feel something?) it is not about reception

Art is absolutely about intent! I'm passionate about that idea.

Art is about intent however I’m wary of people who say “that’s not art”. From what I’ve seen in my decades as an artist, & as someone who’s been part of quite a few subcultures, those who say that tend to be very narrow in their perception of what art is, often excluding many legitimate artists as a result

I guess shitposting is art, because you're trying to elicit an emotional response - however low quality a bar it sets. Is it then reasonable to say that its reception has nothing to do with whether it can be defined as art? Doesn't this in some way prohibit art from evolving?

tangentially reminds me of this post would’ve fetched a decent amount of efferium if it was minted by the artist https://x.com/donnelvillager/status/1741394747594318275?s=46&t=tAxBMgOSal2NAaHhgUOx5g

The opposite is also true though, if art that’s steeped in art and those nose pickers say “that’s too art” then it’s probably good art 🥀🔥

Artists make art from their emotions. Collectors collect art based on their own emotion. Making and selling and buying are three very different mindsets 😅

Just to try and understand, as I am passionate about people’s definition and concept of art - do you think unintentional creations can’t be art? Just to clarify my position, I think art is either everything or nothing. No definition has ever satisfied me.

My personal definition of “art” (an admittedly loose and inclusive definition, YMMV): Anything that requires some kind of agency, volition, or judgement, where the agent turns around and says, “this is art.” This definition includes Dada, conceptual art, found object art, memes, shitposts, and, yes, AI art.

there is an academic understanding of art (which is fluid yet time-bound) & there is a popular understanding of art (which is less fluid yet easy to understand) from my experience, what triggers the former is the looseness & ease of labeling w/o distinctions

the intent is enough to make an assertation that something is art, but does it mean it is art just because of that? I'd say No. It's not really important, time will tell, but there is often great discourse when you exclude things and or fight for something to be included than when you just say everything already is.
