if people very steeped in art say "sorry, that is not art" you should pay attention, because it is triggering enough that it made them defensive imo, art is about intent (did the creator make this to try and make someone feel something?) it is not about reception

I guess shitposting is art, because you're trying to elicit an emotional response - however low quality a bar it sets. Is it then reasonable to say that its reception has nothing to do with whether it can be defined as art? Doesn't this in some way prohibit art from evolving?

you can say "it's bad art which doesn't move us forward because..." but if you have to say "it's not art" defining it by exclusion then that usually comes from a place of being threatened rather than a place of wanting to move things forward imo
