I frequently find myself being discourage about the fact that we're largely only building for the crypto people who are already here. We have this grand vision of bringing the rest of the world onchain but it feels like no one actually knows how to do it. Pretty much every "successful" crypto business comes from PMF with crypto-natives - and very very few apps actually have real users that use the product for the crypto elements. We see glimpses of it every cycle - but it's more about the meta that makes the most money more so than embracing the culture in a way that actually makes a meaningful difference in people's lives. So what happens is it feels like chasing trends when in reality what I'm trying to find is the glue that actually keeps people around. The problem is nothing has kept people around in crypto outside of making money and that simply doesn't scale to the rest of the world. Keeping a close eye on whoever breaks this loop first.

I’m more optimistic. Everyone who is here right now, was previously not a crypto person. New people come into the space everyday. The nuance (and the key) is to build for crypto people, but make it as easy as possible for people to become a crypto person. https://x.com/js_horne/status/1316252693216653317?s=46

yes - and - sharing this in the spirit of collective learning (and NOT dunking): I inquired about the big 'why', and what's next in the @louder TG. The pointers I got from Owner 'santi' (are you here? @db3045 please fw if so) to onboard my friends was 'show them dextool'. Also the FAQ section would mean little to newcomers. David then thankfully mentioned the 1st 2 initiatives which is a great start for a curious bag holder & music lover to entice friends. Higher Athletics is an early experiment to bring RWUsage. Scene coins are a new category imo as they incentivise skin in the game INCL personal action to co-elevate a token / headless brand.

Over the years and past knowledge To make money is why anyone would dedicate fully to anything that takes away their time in the end Sure you can love it and not mind the money, but it's necessary in the end When it comes to crypto, the only way to really get people going is the incentive and assurance that something is gained, even if it's not money. Just as it is in real life too If there's a way to change that, it would be mind blowing

Crypto is a technology and not a feature. As long as it has such a strong culture it won’t go mainstream. You don’t build apps for AI people or web people, you just build useful apps. Once no one ever talks about crypto except engineers, that’ll be a green flag. Normal people could not care less about “decentralization” except in very rare moments. In those moments, it would be great to have credible neutral systems that allow choice and power to users, but outside of that time it shouldn’t be a main marketing point.

another thought: there are many DeFi Degens who are not interested yet in minting art on zora. I was one of them for 3 years. Since Jan 24 I must have minted $1K+ into existence (not counting swatches and optimists) just every day stuff incl. articles, zeitgeist artefacts & some music. Many such cases???

Purple app and /wildcardclub are potentially going to onboard new users, the friends that actually onboarded me here weren’t crypto natives to start, so I can see creators artists and builders coming here to build an audience

well i can speak for myself and say i was not part of the crypto community until march this year when i got onboarded by a friend. i was looking for an escape from twitter and ig and a friend recommended farcaster. but that's just me, it might be tough to break this loop. people are hard to convince and money is always a good tool for convincing. eventually they may embrace the culture but that might not happen during the onboarding process.

Many Japanese who were in FC also left here when DEGEN's allowances were reduced. I am still here because there are many interesting things to do here. I will keep an eye on things in the future!!

I think there is a question of what building for non-crypto means. Everyone in crypto was “non-crypto” first. They used to talk about “will Netflix become HBO faster than HBO can become Netflix” and it seems building great tech brings in more people than forcing a tech on a “use case.” Netflix was an “overnight success” after 20+ years and huge pivots. What I’ve seen of Coop Records is similar in that you’re building what the industry needs and blockchain is helping. Netflix didn’t start with streaming because internet speed wasn’t good enough and perhaps now Wallets aren’t good enough yet. We’ll see soon if Coinbase Smart Wallet or similar begins to change that!

We need to be doing that at this stage It’s natural and the path It will one day soon not be like this You will look back and reminisce on these times thinking you could go back

I very much agree with this. The cycle seems unbreakable in most parts. Most of it comes from financial benefits, such as onboarding artists—they get here, see how hard it can be, and shift back to what they were doing before.

What I learned at YouTube is that what keeps people around is 1) seeing the creator who they are following consistently improve, and 2) being able to track their own improvement in whatever they’re doing and be able to attribute that new energy or status to watching my videos.

I am putting my interest funnels out there like free candy in web2 places. Like the dive bar… where I pick up fun normies, let’s see how it goes! At the very least, I will leave a trail of bread comes and when they’re ready to eat, there will be food.

I think that's the problem with thinking about how to onboard the masses. Nothing will onboard the masses all at once. What will happen is that we keep onboarding small cohorts of people and iterating on UX and features until it attracts the next cohort. Rinse and repeat until it becomes completely normal to be in crypto in some aspect of the average person's life.
