Lots of subreddits going dark to protest their API changes. What do you think will happen to Reddit? - nothing; just a loud vocal minority care - they’ll reverse course - they’ll go the way of Digg: beginning of the end for them

based on longterm personal usage (and passive observation of SOPA/PIPA blackout), this is ellen pao tier policy. plenty of room to reverse course, recent mod post implies they severely overpriced the rate. then again, they changed API policy in reaction to AI companies, so this is their way of capitalizing on crawlers

I think they'll compromise, agreeing to a slightly less ridiculous API pricing model, which is probably what they wanted in the first place. In any case, we need a decentralized alternative to Reddit.

I think Reddit will backpedal a little bit. They’ll probably expand a free tier for API access and offer special pricing for 3rd party client devs. AFAICT the main complaints are from mods and power users who use 3rd party clients and find the default app to be severely lacking (especially for mod tools).

Wouldn’t be surprised if they held the line on this in spite of the blowback. Elon set a new standard in regards to charging for an api that used to be free. Time will tell if they pull back & compromise to a degree.

Lower API pricing. My hot take is that Elon started the tech layoff cycle and the overpriced API cycle. He opened the door and everyone's peeking through.

Ideally, they should work with the third party apps to make it win/win/win for the platform/users/clients. The users could be required to pay for a premium account or opt in to ads and then the platform and the client can split the revenue from each.
