Lots of subreddits going dark to protest their API changes. What do you think will happen to Reddit? - nothing; just a loud vocal minority care - they’ll reverse course - they’ll go the way of Digg: beginning of the end for them

I think Reddit will backpedal a little bit. They’ll probably expand a free tier for API access and offer special pricing for 3rd party client devs. AFAICT the main complaints are from mods and power users who use 3rd party clients and find the default app to be severely lacking (especially for mod tools).

Looks like the selective backpedaling has begun: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/7/23752804/reddit-exempt-accessibility-apps-api-pricing-changes
