How do other parents talk to their kids about Santa? We decided not to say for sure he exists/doesnโ€™t, but instead just say โ€œwhat do you think?โ€ and encourage the kids to imagine possible ways he could exist or not. Curious how others approach this.

Weโ€™ve tried to keep the magic of Santa going as long as possible. We have yet to see any downside. Once our oldest figured out how the operation worked, we told her she gets to help create the magic. She loves it. And we bond over it.

Depends on the age. When our daughter was 2-3, we celebrated solstice and still did presents. No mention of Santa. She was so brainwashed by daycare, school, friends etc she totally forgot and was all in on Santa, I didn't have the heart to Ruin The magic so have just gone along with it. She is 7 now and asked me about it last month and I did the same thing: I asked her what she thought.

We didnโ€™t tell them but the first time they questioned us we folded, said โ€œyeah, itโ€™s fake, something for funโ€. Took them about 5 seconds to process it, no further questions asked

Until the kids can prove he doesn't exist he does. Just like the tooth fairy, the bogeyman, and mary poppins.

I've been trying for the longest time to convince my kids that actually, Santa does exist. Unironically. Sure, he may not exist like you and me exist but he does exist. Yes, in our imaginations, but also more than that. He is the embodiment of the Spirit of Christmas. Santa personifies the abstract virtues of generosity, kindness, and cheer. And he doesn't merely symbolize these qualities, he actually substantiates them through his mythological actions of worldwide gift-giving. If you as a parent "play Santa, " you aren't merely pretending, but are participating in the hypostatic reality of Christmas spirit made manifest. Santa mediates between the magical/spiritual and mundane/material aspects of Christmas. He transforms ordinary generous acts into participants in something transcendent. My kids and I have fun bedtime conversations.
