Who are developers you admire? Carmack is a common one and definitely a legend, but my personal favorite is Fabrice Bellard – so many powerful OSS projects came from him: QEMU, ffmpeg, nncp, and so many other projects that would be a capstone for someone's career that for him was just a lark. Pure talent.

Phil Zimmermann, creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP). When the US prohibited the dissemination of cryptography software in 1995, he published a book with all the C source code to PGP printed in it, because free speech. The US dropped the case and eventually the restrictive regulation too.

D. Richard Hipp who created SQLite and Fossil. Very practical and nonconformist. Here is a read that nicely shows his philosophy https://www.sqlite.org/flextypegood.html

Dennis Ritchie. He had the bad luck of dying right after Steve Jobs, so few people heard about it.

Linus. Without his kernel the world will be completely different. Richard Stallman. His work on GNU also changed everything. Ada Lovelace. She was the first. Without her nothing would exist.
