Who are developers you admire? Carmack is a common one and definitely a legend, but my personal favorite is Fabrice Bellard – so many powerful OSS projects came from him: QEMU, ffmpeg, nncp, and so many other projects that would be a capstone for someone's career that for him was just a lark. Pure talent.

Dennis Ritchie. He had the bad luck of dying right after Steve Jobs, so few people heard about it.
