Ah yes, that's one that always confuses me. For me, "next Monday" is simply whichever Monday comes next, whether it's as soon as tomorrow (assuming today is Sunday) or as far as a week from now (assuming today is Monday).

But, I understand that for some people it means "Monday a week from now", so that in my first example of today being Sunday, it would not be tomorrow but the following Monday.

So, I take "next" literally whereas some people think of an implied reference to "next [week's] Monday".

If I have to say it, I say "this coming Monday" instead. If somebody else says "next Monday", I always ask for clarification.

I feel like this is a uniquely American term, but is it ambiguous to anyone? For me, it's just an adjective applying to any object (e.g., an area) that involves three different states

If your question is specifically about tri-, I see no confusion there, but then again I studied Latin and my native language is a Romance one, so bi-, tri-, quadri-, etc. are natural prefixes for me

I think the cognitive hurdle comes from people assigning the prefix "bi" (meaning "two") to the word "weeks", leading to "every two weeks" in their heads.

When in reality, the prefix "bi" applies to the word "weekly", which is a *rate* and not a unit of time.

Hence, the correct interpretation is "two weekly" or, in better English, "twice weekly".
