One hill I will die on: bi-weekly should only ever mean twice a week. Semi-weekly (or fortnightly) is for once every two weeks.

Ah yes, that's one that always confuses me. For me, "next Monday" is simply whichever Monday comes next, whether it's as soon as tomorrow (assuming today is Sunday) or as far as a week from now (assuming today is Monday).

But, I understand that for some people it means "Monday a week from now", so that in my first example of today being Sunday, it would not be tomorrow but the following Monday.

So, I take "next" literally whereas some people think of an implied reference to "next [week's] Monday".

If I have to say it, I say "this coming Monday" instead. If somebody else says "next Monday", I always ask for clarification.

I think the cognitive hurdle comes from people assigning the prefix "bi" (meaning "two") to the word "weeks", leading to "every two weeks" in their heads.

When in reality, the prefix "bi" applies to the word "weekly", which is a *rate* and not a unit of time.

Hence, the correct interpretation is "two weekly" or, in better English, "twice weekly".

I’m also a non-American, Romance language native speaker who studied Latin for years. That’s why I’m firmly in the camp that bi- means twice and semi- means half.

Something happening twice a week is “bis in hebdomada” in Latin (giving “bi-hebdomadaire” in French, meaning twice weekly); and something half cooked is “semicrematus”.

So there should be no ambiguity that biweekly is twice a week, and semi-weekly is half weekly.

Nobody ever misinterprets the words “bisexual” nor “semicircle”, for example, but somehow the time domain trips people up
