Now that we're collectively in a bargaining phase of grief, two things can simultaneously be true: 1) someone can hurt you and shouldn’t be trusted again 2) they, like all humans, carry trauma and deserve compassion The lesson here IMO is learning how to protect oneself without closing your heart and losing your tenderness

Totally agree. "Hate the sin, not the sinner." When the issues are pathological, you'll have to draw hard boundaries. But it doesn't mean you don't feel for the person.

Well said. I think this situation with Proxy is especially grief-stricken and somewhat difficult to process due to the seemingly genuinely good natured character he had established on FC. It’s possible he had grown beyond the past indiscretions, it sounds like he hadn’t done anything nefarious with Clanker. But also possible that was all sociopathic and setting up for another calamity. Things seem to have been handled properly when the Gabagool info came to light. I’m sympathetic for Proxy yet also realize it’s the price he has to pay for committing an egregious betrayal in the past

Actions have consequences, and they need to. When accountability is real and consistent, it sets a tone where people feel safe showing up fully. Compassion works best when it’s backed by boundaries — otherwise it’s just self-sacrifice.

100% - everyone deserves compassion. sanctioning those behaviors at the community level while caring for the person at the individual level is important. we all make mistakes

i think that it is productive to learn how to integrate this after the fact, over learning how to protect yourself. the emotions that i have felt in the last two days have been important for me to feel, and if i had closed myself in the interactions that i had in the past with alex they wouldn't have been there you never know who is on the other side. you can't predict this happening. you can only control how you personally relate to what happens downstream of its implosion imho
