Everytime I get excited about NFTs (as they exist currently) I come back to the blackpill that the only thing that is onchain is the metadata and most of the actual NFT content is just hosted on S3 buckets Can someone un-blackpill me? I still think the underlying tech is cool fwiw

I think the crux of the issue is the difference in public perception of IPFS and the ethereum chain. IPFS is a sick piece of technology that is strongly censorship resistant and has serious adoption (therefore durability). I recommend going and learning about it, it's really cool tech, and meets the reqs you have.

1. Entirely on-chain SVGs 2. NFTs as visual media while neat, is limiting. That's like saying the web is only useful for static read only pages. It's the start of an entirely new computing platform that is permissionless, composable and remixable.

Is this true still? In 2020 and early 2021, I think it might have been mostly true, but I think the pendulum swung the opposite direction pretty quickly. Every month Pinata sees billions of requests to IPFS gateways for NFT metadata and media.

Everything would be easier if there was a tool converting other formats to (actual) SVGs. But new collections should create their art as svgs in the first place.

I think the “problem” is that so much is still anchored on the artistic side vs taking NFTs for what they are: a row on a public ledger. You could be amazing things such as a version of CarFax entirely on chain, and none of the data would be centralized.

You need to find the innovators. On-chain NFTs can be really unique. Reducing the vulnerability of loosing information is the goal of on-chain tokens. Keep in mind not everything should always be on-chain.

To un-blackpill ignore jpegs. NFT utility is digital access to a community or a power up for an app. Ownership and access to digital goods. e.g. steam game library becomes NFTs. Ad space on a website becomes an NFT. Concert tickets etc. These are only some skeuomorphs though.
