Random question for Indians here: What is the mood in the country regarding the idea of changing the timezone toward something aligned with UTC (either +5 or +6)? Intuitively it feels like it could be a significant convenience boost given the growing desire and ability to participate more in the international economy

there had been discussions before to move it by 30 mins but i don't think the elected govt has taken it seriously yet to be implemented https://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/move-ist-ahead-by-30-minutes-save-3-5-billion-units-of-energy-scientists/story-lIpcg5ucA4a0fDTEA6Wt6I.html

To be honest, the country doesn’t have a take on it. Or at least I haven’t come across any discussions around this topic. Although a more aligned time zone could boost international economy participation especially support software and consulting gigs.

In reality India ideally Should have at least 4 timezones. But I see almost no discussion about it. The Northeast state did get an unofficial +1 hour time zone. Personally I feel whole world should adopt just 1 time. i.e. UTC but not gonna happen for another century.

Personally I'd welcome it. Not least because GMT complications on watches are fun. More generally speaking, I haven't heard it come up in general conversation / discourse at all.

30 mins of difference + or - highly doubt if it would make a significant difference. That’s being said I think India is heading in the right direction for growth, even contemplating increasing the trading hours for securities which would be a ++ overall.

Tbh it will be very helpful. You will find me go to bed at 6 or sometimes 7am because I'm participating in the international economy. It has messed up my circadian rhythm. I hope it doesn't affect my desire to live longer.

Economically, it makes more sense for India to have two time zones than one. If India is to take this endeavour, it has to be that over aligning with UTC, IMO.

Honestly doesn't matter much, don't know how it will help in connect more with the international economy, UTC +5:30 we are living with it and its working well all over the country.

I'd support it to be more consistent with global timezones and make coordinating times easier, which otherwise is an everyday challenge working in part of distributed global teams. Not sure what the general sentiment in the country is.

Indian elections r coming up this year, 99.9% of the country has no opinion on this tbh. There are other topics being discussed altogether.

No talk around timezones, but people do prefer to work in different timezones to boost productivity and spend more time doing cool shits
