This is honestly quite impressive. A China-tier ten-year urban transformation, happening in a major city in the United States. I feel like discourse hasn't quite adjusted to this yet. https://twitter.com/DocumentingATX/status/1764631328723460247

Some stats: https://twitter.com/DKThomp/status/1769711918095163489 That growth rate, if it continues, would double Austin's apartment capacity in less than nine years.

I used to live there in 2000-01. There were water problems and aquifer stress even then. I don’t the region had the carrying capacity. Bit like Vegas 50 years ago (I lived there too, 2012). Water is one constraint that’s very hard to flip to abundance in natural arid zones.

Boston's seaport transformation in the last decade has been quite remarkable as well! I remember going to the neighorhood as a kid and now it's so shockingly different (and better). https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/16k87lr/transformation_of_the_seaport_district/

Quickly becoming one of the worst cities to live because they refuse to adopt mass transit, stupidly thinking “more lanes” will magically fix things.

Agreed. I was watching the sky scrappers growing the other day. I could see half a dozen from my office window downtown. While other parts of the US are in decay, in Austin specifically, Texas & Florida broadly, are growing very fast and absorbing the economic / cultural refugees from other states.

It’s an urban planning strategy called Vancouverism. It has downsides.

If only these tall buildings were not mostly empty offices... From my experience, rent hasn't decreased the slightest since I moved here 2+ years ago.

All to culminate in a China-tier introduction of a complete disregard for the bodily agency of half of the population in the state 🤗 You love to see it
