Upgraded both my MBP and iPad Pro in the last year and am using the latter much more for work than before. For a variety of eyesight/ergonomic issues, and effect of going 16” where weight/bulk/screen size tradeoff ironically makes it less usable except hooked up to a monitor, defeating the big-screen purpose.

At this point iOS is the limiter, not the hardware. I can see myself not using a laptop at all in a few years. iPad + maybe a home server? Feels like laptop is a dying form factor, both OS and h/w wise.

I use iPad Pro exclusively, do not have a MacBook anymore. For coding etc I use Pythonista app for Python dev stuff and Working Copy as a git client. For other dev work I have a Digital Ocean instance that I SSH into via the Blink app. Works well if you’re comfortable with command line.

Same place myself. I've found that Stage Manager, despite its flaws, made a huge difference. I just switch to desktop now when I need VS Code, do admin stuff in Discord that the iOS app doesn't support, or for my monthly backups. (If Discord and Tresorit had Linux ARM64 clients, I'd probably just go full iPad + RPi.)

having multiple device lines with same kernel with slightly different UX is a good way for making money from the same customer

Curious if the new AR/VR kit will change this calculus at all.

I really just want to be able to connect an iPad to a monitor and get full-on Mac OS, why is this unreasonable to them? They already basically require a keyboard/mouse

My experience has been similar. I feel like I’m increasingly iPad-first, but occasionally need a larger screen or feel limited by iOS (slide design). Form factor + battery life + pencil feels way better than laptop for most things.
