Side effect of using the Vision Pro a lot: I just watched a movie in a movie theater and found myself making pinching gestures with my fingers to bring up the on-screen controls of the movie.

When downloading a movie in the Max app on the Vision Pro the file size is 8 GB! 😮 I guess watching a movie in excellent quality on a movie-theater sized screen comes at a cost 😅

Limitation I noticed when working in Vision Pro: A lot of times I need to take a screenshot of an app to capture info to save and reference later. You technically can take screenshots in AVP but you get a photo of your living room with window floating in the middle with blurry edges. Would be good to have a “targeted screenshot” of a specific 2D window which comes out like an iPad screenshot.

iOS settings app weirdness: there are two independent places where you can set “start week on Sunday/monday”: either in Calendar or General-> Language & Region. Only the Calendar setting changes what you see in Calendar. Also none of these settings changes the calendar on Apple Watch. 😅

Interesting tidbit from John Gruber: VisionOS will not be getting Apple Intelligence anytime soon even though the Vision Pro has an M2 chip. The reason is that the Vision Pro uses the neural engine all the time for hand occlusion, object recognition etc so not enough capacity for AI. https://daringfireball.net/2024/06/wwdc24_apple_intelligence

One of the strangest thing in VisionOS is that the Contacts app is completely missing (no native or iPad version). I was going through my mail today on the AVP and I noticed one of my contacts had a misspelled name. No way to correct it at all. Hopefully they can fix that in VisionOS 2.0 😅

So channels seem to be almost completely useless now. Why not have priority mode in the recent feed of channels? For instance the /ai channel is gated by 100 warps and the recent feed still looks like this:

Just finished interesting chess game against GPT-4o (I was black). Game very equal at first, then the AI trapped my pieces and got a huge advantage. Finally it did a couple of big blunders which I was able to take advantage of in the endgame and win. Posting full game PNG below in reply cast.

Big fan of this update on chess dot com. Happened to me several times that I was in a winning position, fiddled with the king then decided I wanted to move the rook and ooops now I’ve castled right into an attack! 😫

So does chess dot com use a server-based, much stronger engine when doing game review? I suppose that’s why it doesn’t work offline? The reason I’m asking is that when playing against the best engine it’s not making all the best moves and also makes some mistakes etc.

Is anyone watching candidates live? I feel like classical chess is way too slow to enjoy watching live and I much prefer the more modern events with rapid time controls of around 15 minutes. For candidates I’ve just been watching the Gotham recap every day.

One of the strangest things about the Vision Pro is how you do not have access to your iCloud bookmarks in Safari. Gotta start from scratch. Also no “contacts” app, they instead have a system-level tab “People” that display some of the people you have messaged, FaceTimed etc.
