Big fan of this update on chess dot com. Happened to me several times that I was in a winning position, fiddled with the king then decided I wanted to move the rook and ooops now I’ve castled right into an attack! 😫

So does chess dot com use a server-based, much stronger engine when doing game review? I suppose that’s why it doesn’t work offline? The reason I’m asking is that when playing against the best engine it’s not making all the best moves and also makes some mistakes etc.

Is anyone watching candidates live? I feel like classical chess is way too slow to enjoy watching live and I much prefer the more modern events with rapid time controls of around 15 minutes. For candidates I’ve just been watching the Gotham recap every day.

One of the strangest things about the Vision Pro is how you do not have access to your iCloud bookmarks in Safari. Gotta start from scratch. Also no “contacts” app, they instead have a system-level tab “People” that display some of the people you have messaged, FaceTimed etc.

Another AVP friction point: The easiest way to open apps is “Hey Siri, open <App>”. AFAIK there is no way to invoke Siri without saying “Hey Siri” (pressing and holding Digital Crown centers all windows). Thus when I have my iPhone and iPad next to me these two will sometimes trigger Siri instead.

Finally got my AVP and have been putting it through its paces. It’s truly great but very much a 1.0 product. Biggest friction for me is no way to use non-English language with either physical or virtual keyboard. I regularly chat/email in different languages and I have to revert to English on AVP, not always doable.

Good use for the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro: where I live the public transportation system uses an app that shows your ticket as a QR code which you then scan to ride. I programmed the action button to open that app so I can just hit one button to get out my ticket.

Here is a game I just played, I am white and it’s my turn. My first instinct is to initiate a queen trade and then take the bishop on c4, giving me a whole bishop in the trade, which is great. However I thought some more and found another tactic that wins me a queen without trading my own. Can you see the tactic?

How tf do people play 1min bullet chess? You have like a second per move? I’ve been trying to beat the Martin bot on chess dot com (250 ELO) and he beats me every time 😂

This was a position in a game I just played, I have black pieces. The move I played here was f6 but the top engine move (>10 eval points for black better than my move) just felt strange to me. I had to go in analysis mode and play it out several moves before I could see why it was good. Can you see the move?

So it seems like chess notation is sometimes ambiguous? For instance the two different moves below are both denoted Qbc4 in chess dot com. It seems in this situation the starting file b is not enough too disambiguate since both queens start on file b. I would think here that you need further info like Qb4c4 vs Qb3c4.
