i think it’s masterful distraction strategy that we’re discussing immigrants in Ohio eating pets as some abstract definition of racism instead of focusing on the *actual* issues caused by an unchecked border (national security and debt, employment, healthcare), and i think we’re all foolish to be falling for it.

We don't share reality any longer. We don't agree on trusted sources for facts. Any debate about policy is upstream on being able to agree on facts. Until we can agree on ground truth, this will only get worse, not better.

Unchecked border? Nani? National security and employment sure, to certain degrees, agreed. How does the border tie to debt and healthcare? I’m curious

People don’t get elected on policy, people get elected on brand. In fact if you discuss policy you end up at a disadvantage because your opponent can skewer your policy while revealing nothing of their own. Politics is war and war is deception. It’s going to take a massive cultural shift to change it. We have to have more than 2 parties, we have to change voting systems, and we need to make people actually care.

But who created the distraction? JD Vance and his weird cronies. No one prompted Trump to falsely claim Haitians were eating their neighbors pets. This has been a purely right wing effort to stoke (largely racial) fear about *legal* immigrants to persuade voters to choose Trump. And how can we talk about border security without talking about how Lindsey Graham himself on the Senate floor told us that Donald Trump tanked a bipartisan border security bill this year that everyone but Trump and his sycophants wanted to pass?

Ya, like the fact that undocumented workers paid 96.7 billion in state a federal taxes in 2022 and how devastating it would be to our economy if we shipped them all out the way Trump is proposing.

The "distraction" about immigrants eating cats was 100% perpetuated by Republicans, so maybe they shouldn't have done that if they wanted to talk about any real issues.

How does talking about people eating pets lead to a discussion about immigration policy? Is the rhetoric not a complete evasion of the *actual* issues in a cheap attempt at fearmongering? How is it anything other than what the most obvious conclusion is? One could debate immigration but it is manifest that the people taking about pet eaters have no interest in doing so. They don’t deserve legitimation.

Trump killed the bipartisan border bill to keep it as a political issue he could try to use in this election.

I’d see this all the time when I worked in justice system policy. I think a big flaw in leftist tactics is not making moderates feel safe before proposing policy. Amygdala/primal fear overrides logic in most people so they don’t process logical arguments about long term consequences.

Agree with the other issues posted but the border isn’t “unchecked” that’s a buzzword to perpetuate fear. Would have been in a much better state if Trump didn’t order the republicans to kill the GOP written bill

masterful plan to make the story up and inject it into the debate? This resurged narrative that "Haitians eat cats" is rooted in a very specific anti-african barbaric sentiment. The border deal was killed as a publicity stunt. WE are not falling for it

It's hard to have nuanced conversations about immigration which is why Republicans tend to gravitate towards migrant crime or now migrant pet eating. People understand that. They don't understand that states are using emergency medicaid dollars within emergency rooms to provide care for undocumented individuals.

Of course. Because the discourse is not intended to inform you, or get you closer to a solution, but attract votes. Stated vs revealed.

None of the above save for national security perhaps are issues that were caused by an unchecked border. There are scores more reasons for the above. That’s not to say that there are not massive issues with this border. But it’s an error to mix up issues. We need to better understand what exactly is wrong to fix it. The border is an issue, but the border won’t fix the rest of the things you’ve mentioned.

Why use dumb distractions when focusing on the *actual* issues is far more relevant and compelling? By dumbing down and sensationalizing the issue, the GOP is actually discrediting itself and missing a chance to actually lay out a plan.

For folks who want the facts: immigration is not the cause for your high costs of goods and services. But trumps tariffs will! As someone who works in an industry riddled with tariffs, I promise we pass the cost onto you as a consumer. You PAY MORE so corporate executives make more Also: trump is the reason for our “unchecked border” & creating the issues that he’s now ranting about. If you hate immigrants, look to trump bc he’s why they’re pouring across borders illegally “Trump was able to use a controversial 2018 performance quota policy to significantly alter the behavior of immigration judges—particularly among those judges who typically favor noncitizens’ claims in immigration cases—to advance his agenda to drastically reduce immigration. Our findings have significant implications for immigration judge independence, due process protections for noncitizens, and presidential power” https://www.promarket.org/2024/02/21/how-trumps-quota-policy-transformed-immigration-judging/?amp
