random thoughts on onchain content: 1. for most people with taste (including artists, creators, etc), its actually demotivating and not compelling when they see bad content earn more money onchain than good content; obviously bad/good is subjective, but a turnoff nonetheless 2. most of the major onchain “curators” (i.e. people who can move markets to drive earnings for creators) are people with influence but not necessarily with taste; obviously not true for all onchain content models, but true for most “viral” pieces of onchain content and memes whoever solves this wins

The cynic in me thinks these systems are working as intended. They're optimized for quantity, not quality, which is how the tech industry values its products. Average consumers don't care for high quality content if they feel like their contributions of their own (unknowingly low quality) content have value.

Feels like there’s still no proper system for trusted curation without falling back on the same old influence games.

this is true for nearly all social platforms though tbh. seeing influencers make it big by making the most brain rot content ever is pretty demotivating. Instagram, TikTok etc, are wastelands, yet that’s where the network effects are. All the while talented artists, musicians, designers struggle to build an audience and make enough to pay rent

You just put into words why content and art, just doesn’t work on the “free market” because the markets incentive is very different from the average art consumer and enjoyer

yep exactly. It's become purely an extension of influence, rather than quality (not that they are mutually exclusive ofc, as influence can arise from quality) But, that means low effort cointent earns more money than high quality, high effort art, which is demoralizing and I think takes away from the ecosystem as a whole

Crypto isn’t compatible with good taste. People motivated by tech and finance are too analytical to feel culture. They can only fit it into brain spreadsheets and think “I’ll buy this watch or this art because it’s expensive so people will think I’m cultured.”

I think the solution would have to align with my fundamental thesis: The primary purpose of publishing data onchain is to enable more users of that data. The more people who can read/use a database, the more people who can make that data valuable. So what would a solution look like? One which emphasizes the usage of data. The core insight is shifting from: "How can I monetize this content?" to "How can I ensure this content remains useful?" Show more and different metrics. Show how many times data was used. Show how many apps data was used in. Show how much content was generated using the data. Example app: Image generator which shows not just Views and Likes, but emphasizes how many other pieces of content used that data.

reminds me of a thought I shared a few days back https://warpcast.com/ashwini/0x2284bfa6 (context is a platform running right now that's a pivot from another popular platform they had) the workings/curation/curators model didn't change (your #2) #1 is always going to be open ended

Sometimes it feels like the onchain world just mirrors web2 clout chasing, but way faster and louder. Tell me if I’m wrong

What I find de-motivating is that it matters more WHO publishes the content than the content itself. I guess this is a centuries old problem as lots of classic art is valued based on the creator. But in the current space, two people can publish the same meme and the bigger account will just earn more by default.

Random thought: FC + AI agents aren’t a bad start. FC allows for non-silo’d content communities (like channels but also entirely custom FC clients). AI Agents can be trained to evaluate content not for “quality” (however defined) and push highest quality to higher distribution levels. FC could have an “AI agent objective function” in the protocol (maybe that exists?) Basically the social network client’s “algorithm” for determining what should go viral.

Agreed; So. I remember folks talking about Ethereum Attestation service. Could attestation (eventually) solve this? I suppose then you’d have to deal with the whole Sybil thing (aka a group of 50 people who personally know the artist, or the artist with enough time to create 50 different accounts) mucking up the whole idea of attestation. I got nothing. :(

How do you think people who don't necessarily have taste become influencers who can move the market? This condition makes me think the dynamics of becoming an influencer are broken somehow.

this is something i think about often, because, alas, it makes me depressed. imo the issue is that 'taste' can't be (easily) taught and 'vibes' are easy to sell. i also think the technical crowd (generally) fails to have any deep or lasting interest in educating themselves about art, because they can't see a clear value metric in doing so. adding crypto to the mix just made it more apparent. this space also skews heavily male, and art (& curation) skews female. there's a fundamental mismatch between those w/ taste knowledge & what's considered valuable aka viral aka metrics based.
