last year, i started hosting a Topics of Controversy dinner series.

each dinner is anchored around a taboo topic and kicks off with a few thought-provoking questions before we dive into a respectful discussion / debate.

my biggest takeaway? 

people LOVE to learn IRL with and from each other.

we need more of this.

agree, although i think doing it IRL is more  impactful (for us and for society) than online in private group chats.

we become better examples and cultural influencers if we’re able to learn how to have intellectual discourse in person — spoken conversations w/ active listening — that we then pass on to others.

I'm part of a Signal group that debates hot topics. It's extremely useful to have a space space to debate complex topics without fear

addressing the way we converse online (lack of conversation, more so reactions) is only a small part of the solution.

the other part is finding and encouraging people (like me) to put in the effort to make these conversations happen.

Makes sense to me, conversations provide context

a few things:

1. i set expectations with everyone at the start

2. i also play the role of moderator if it starts to get messy

3. but tbh most of the credit goes to the people sitting around to table; the type of person who opts into these dinners is a person who tries hard to identify emotions and rise above them

Gender identification awareness and expression in starting in grade schools.

Topic idea 2: segregated schools (by cognitive capacities or gender) lead to better outcomes as the students population is more homogeneous.

Fun fact: in my old home city, there were 2 maybe 3 mixed secondary school. It wasn’t a tiny city…

In the Netherlands certain job vacancies mention your “thinking level”. It was worded like “MBO thinking level”. MBO is  secondary vocational education.
