i really enjoyed the places around nice much more than nice itself - avignon and nimes were two of my favorite spots.

https://goo.gl/maps/fNYeoXrTDzpWAME17 — but i'm not sure if it is still as good as in 2019 (don't go out of your way to visit, it's a small restaurant that was close to our airbnb but if you'll be in the area, check it out)

In Normandy, visit the D-Day cemetery at Omaha beach. Separately, Mont Saint-Michel is a unique visit. Outside of Normandy, the Palace of Versailles and Monaco are high up my list.

Les Routiers can be excellent places to stop for lunch when travelling. They're unpretentious and usually great value for money. https://www.connexionfrance.com/article/Comment/Opinion/Les-Routiers-dining-concept-that-is-uniquely-French

"Main roads in France, designated Route Nationale or “N” roads, can be acceptable for long journeys as an alternative to toll roads. Of course you can’t travel as fast, but they are often straight and un-crowded and are a nice alternative to monotonous toll roads."

Perhaps good to get a few alternative plans. France crippled with strikes this quarter (gov trying to force change pension system). It seems you cover a banana area from Normandy to Provence. No chance to go South-West? If so the Bordeaux and Toulouse area can be attractive. If not, a stop in Burgundy can be pleasant.

After Nice, you can head back north through the Route Napoleon, which goes from Cannes to Grenoble. You’ll see the various flavours of Provence in a single trip (from seaside, to plateau, to upper mountains) And then from Grenoble it’s 1h back to Lyon and you’re back in middle-ish of country
