I've been a part of the art community for 2.5 years on X & now here for a few months, & I can tell you with certainty that artists on @farcaster are at a crossroads. Best case 1: There's some foundational shift where the fc ecosystem elevates these "quality content" creators & they can have a meaningful existence here. Best Case 2: They go explore Lens or maybe back to X (where despite the algo, they get some recognition for their art from their peers). Worst case: They get disenchanted with web3 altogether because they've been scammed, rugged, ignored, reduced to a number & pretty much treated like second class citizens regardless of where they exist. I worry about this the most. Irony 1: The art community is the most vibrant community any social community can have. We literally have generational talent hanging out amongst us & most of us are unaware. Irony 2: Artists who are here are the most tech forward of the normie bunch we'd wanna onboard. Biggest assets for any social platform. 1/2 🧵

Reality 1: Artists have been testing/participating in every piece of tech that's been released. Artists are driving every metric, whether it's qDAU or volume etc., up. Yet, that interest and engagement hasn't been reciprocated. How much engagement do the most engaged userbase of tech get back? Pretty much none. Reality 2: The tipping meta has kept artists here so far but we're seeing how that's unraveling. What other reasons remain for a userbase that's overlooked to remain here? Small fish in a big pond doesn't sound that defeating when the small pond doesn't have any bites. 2/3 🧵

I don’t want to add fuel to the fire, but maybe some sparks. On Airstack I can see one of my casts got 308 likes, 161 comments, and 232 recasts. It was a fun little mint for my community. It earned 1,3000 moxie. On Warpcast those numbers are: 115 likes, can’t even see the number of replies, and 93 recasts. Warpcast has decided that half my community is low value and not the right type of engagement. I can see it from the moxie values. I know this. But it kills me inside because I know my community is kind and generous and supportive of me and this feels like they’ve been labeled worthless.

I resonate with this. I know you're talking about artists but I think you could expand to all creators (in my case software). we all want to build sustainable revenue streams that let us continue doing what we love far into the future. I think FC can be a place for that but it's not predestined.

What a great time you coming out with this thread. I have been screaming into emptiness all this time about it so far all my efforts went to vain. What's very surprising on fc is the silent treatment people get when they raise legit concerns. Instead of offering assistance They try to tell you otherwise. If this many people are raising concern instead of saying hey we gotta look into this. They try to tell you it's your fault you dont know how to use the platform. What to say after that. But hoping this they will notice

The fun here seems to be fading fast. Maybe it's just a late holiday effect, and the artists will return strong to the platform in a few weeks. Or, all the issues you mentioned that are affecting the art community on FC/WC could end up pushing us away once more, like on many other platforms where we eagerly invested so much time and money

I've been straddling here and X, did Lens for a bit and will go back if there's a chance to get real traction there coming in cold (I had the same few ppl only interacting). The vibe is more positive here, there are more ppl still on X, so many plus and minus to each but at the end of the day X is where I'm seen more and will get the most of my time. But all of these still have discovery issues where small fish are always small fish.

you expanded greatly on something i wrote here early on in the year - more about the loyal part than the features. outside and out of control factors do play a role in all of this, and I do respect FAFO, but i will die on this hill: the introduction of the Power Badge was a shot in the foot in the FC ecosystem. Big time. It came at a time that things were flourishing (yes, degen tipping helped but it was not all) and put a lot of people in limbo. The feature itself and the attitude/treatment were a big bummer, to say the least. https://warpcast.com/rodrigobardin/0x1720517d

Some points/thoughts... 1) 'Elevation' of quality content requires people to know what is Good. Most people do not know what is good. Bad taste is ubiquitous. What is missing in web3 art, to me, is curation. The gallerist, museum, tastemaker, etc. This is probably controversial as it goes against a lot of web3's so called 'ethos', but having respected figures go out and find the best and most deserving work to amplify would be very valuable. 2) Contributing to bad taste is the over-democratization of art. It is too cheap and easy for anyone to create 'art' and put it up for sale with 0 consequences. I rarely see people put hard and original work into art on chain. And even if they do, good artists are usually horrible marketers. TL;DR - the good art gets lost in a massive sea of bad art. most people don't know what is good. i'd like to see curatorial organizations form (not DAOs, no buying-in) that work to curate the best artists on chain. these orgs could even provide grants!

Well said! I was part of the big influx of artists earlier this year and many really liked the platform because it felt like we were reaching new people and seeing works that would have otherwise been buried by xwitter’s algorithm. The tipping meta was also great bc many of us could pay bills by using and sharing our arts! But since the spring it’s been so downhill! I had a powerbadge that got taken away, despite cohosting the gifart channel and starting a theory channel. Sharing art and media doesn’t get you any reach or discovery. Systems like Moxie only entrench user hierarchies. It feels pretty terrible and the thought of trying yet another platform is exhausting, when we just rather spend time making art. It’s sad and feels kind of hostile.

Totally agree your thoughts . This platform is becoming more and more for existing users because it designed that way.. New users do not get that much reach because of algorithms and degen locks. They give up easily. most of the artists from deaf community aren’t active here…

1) wallets and platforms don’t give a fuck ab artists bc the art here is supposed to be about tradeable value. you can’t organize your wallets bc the goal is for artists to keep dropping.

Thanks for the ping @manuwilliams 🤘🫶 I’d love to see best case 1 play out. I think I’m at worst case x 10. I’ve been rugged, robbed, shadow banned, zero visibility etc etc for the last 3 years on X, here, IG, where I’m just numb. I’ve seen copies of my work and hard to get past where the others work gets more interest. It’s frustrating but I continue on. I’ve been lucky to have a few wins more recently (and grateful) with having my work get recognized or selected for exhibitions. I had a good feeling getting on here the first season, second and third but then time and interest slipped. There are other platforms where just communicating with others on a genuine level pays you. It’s part of a web3 project/ community that’s really been the constant over the last 3 years. I haven’t tried lens but heard about it. I’m usually one to try something out as an early adopter but not sure if it’s worth it. So many platforms, not enough time.

Without art, you lose music parties, DJs, writers, performers huge sector Even food. Without those lines of expression, without free Will, there is no growth, there's no littl bit more. “For the culture “ cos without it you fucked.

Seriously resonate with a lot of what you’ve said on this thread Sunny. I also feel like the way things are going, art has almost been institutionally channeled into “content” where it is soon going to be in a similar situation to web2 social media. The rewards and incentives artists got initially for keeping their unlimited/open edition mints to below a dollar was a great move to generate more unique mints ie higher volumes for platforms. But at the same time, they reduced the actual value of the art and likened collecting art to (pardon the pun) a “like” from web2 social media. A win for the platform. Crumbs for the artist. The equation for artists is far heading to: Web2 social media = Web3 social media. And in the absence of art, a lot of these platforms may as well be GitHub or Reddit forums.

Thank you, dear Sunny, for expressing these concerns so eloquently and passionately! Just as in life, the same applies here—people are usually willing to work hard toward a shared goal, but they tend to withdraw when they feel ignored and excluded. If the goal is to build this ecosystem for the community and as a community, then change is urgent and necessary. Curious to read more comments and takes ❤️

I’m a part time artist and my art goes into the abyss here (and on X) - I find it so Unnatural to always be engaging and always sharing and liking. But I share pics from my garden and they get so much more engagement, not a ton but at least I know they are being seen.
