One criticism from Molly White I read last cycle that I did actually agree with, which was that crypto is strangely self-referential. The social layer is filled with a lot of already crypto-pilled people, telling other already crypto-pilled people why crypto is good/valuable. You don't really see this in other spaces, I'd say it comes across slightly as cope, people who need to keep convincing themselves they're right Arguably this just arises from a defensive position since it's also true that no other industry also faces as much criticism, fud, etc.

it’s a cult. has upsides and downsides, false prophets and incredible builders & visionaries, all fundamentally imagining a new world many other tech movements are learning from it

this is very, very true — biggest point of feedback that i hear from onboarding people who are crypto curious or tangentially informed about crypto.

I've heard it said that crypto is just one big group chat with other crypto people. That might be true in a lot of cases, but one thing I noticed from the first run of @highermarket goods was how often they sparked conversations with people outside of crypto. It makes me think that Higher (as an ethos) has the potential to resonate beyond the 'already crypto-pilled' crowd. And merch, in particular, feels like a natural way to bridge that gap -- something tangible that invites curiosity and discussion rather than just reinforcing existing beliefs.

Truth. Start to finish. To your last point, we can't say some of the criticism isn't deserved. Crimes are being committed in the open and it's all recorded on social media and on-chain. Yet plenty of bad actors remain as prominent figures within the industry

Imo this is mainly a product of social media. Not that many interested non-crypto people trying to learn in good faith, mainly just people who have made their mind up and want to fight online Irl I’ve had great conversations with many non-crypto holders and have onboarded a dozen plus

Because everyone here is holding bags that they can't untie themselves from whereas bags aren't as acute in other spaces.

That’s my feeling as well. Either you are in the bubble or very far away of it. It is very hard to get into the game and find a place in it. I’ve been here for almost one year and still don’t consider myself totally in.

That's pretty on the nose. I also feel the same way about many of the projects built in the space: it cryptobros building for cryptobros. It's like we have an allergy of building for anyone other than ourselves.

Yes, and not just on the social layer. I would say the vast majority of apps (and certainly the marketing for apps) is also self-referential. How many web3 apps are actually attractive for a web2 audience? There’s a lot of potential for web2.5, i.e. crypto/blockchain tech in the background but something easy/fun/useful to sign up for up front. I can’t think of many examples for stuff like that. Sorare has done it for sports fans, Robinhood or Coinbase are very good on the finance side. Any other good examples?

Thats because the social layer is wrapped around a core technology which is fundamentally different than anything else out. Ill bet you see this in AI too.
