I’ve learned a lot about myself and my psychology these last few months. Most of the time the hard way. Which makes me wonder if the hard way is the only way to learn something

Or perhaps put differently - you have to pay a cost to learn something. Give up some resource of yours, time attention money energy etc. A lesson you learn without giving up anything, is probably not something you’ve actually learned

I think maybe it’s retrieval. Your brain doesn’t prioritize the information unless it has a reason to. Invoking high emotions is prob what does it which is what the hard way usually involves. So probably you’re right, the hard way is best.

i find i retain lessons longer if i learn something the hard way lessons learned secondhand feels less tangible, whereas firsthand lessons feel like they've been seared into my mind
