I think its the wrong take, but I don't think its unreasonable - it makes a lot of sense if you're making this decision based on a totally financialized bildungsroman (lmao, someone stop me) I'm more of a humanist or idealist, college is a process of learning & socialization of immense value for those who apply themselves generally believe that broad 'intelligence' matters more than ever in a post-singularity world - optimizing for a 'career' path in the traditional sense will become obsolete liberal arts kids will rise

college is a resource if you think you don't need it and your time can be used elsewhere to garner as much density of useful resources as effectively (or more) then no reason to go for the vast majority of people, they believe this to be true, but they're not who they think they are

i don’t believed money language power hierarchy or politics are going anywhere in the next decade. college will remain a great way to meet lots of people and be exposed to things beyond your family/geography/youtube feed. americans hate college excessively because economics of higher education in america are particularly distorted. in germany and france they pay you to go to university. as always high agency individuals will not need institutional support to be successful, but it can definitely help them too

Not unreasonable from the career decision perspective but there are other reasons for college. Maybe AI brings back all the humanities and literature and art and music and decouples colleges and universities from job placement duties

singularity/AI aside, relevance of college will depend on who you are and where you live. In Japan, college is a rubber stamp needed for a lot of jobs. In elite circles in the US, it can be a countersignal unless you're from one of like five select schools. The fact that you're already thinking like this means that college will probably be less valuable for your kids than those climbing up from a different point on the ladder.

Unless it's about meeting people (which shouldn't be understated), I already don't see the point of a college education

reaching singularity in the next decade or two is probably unlikely, being in the space makes us feel like everything moves fast but the real world moves slow but i do see a world where ai tutors could be superior to college and where we could monetise ourselves completely through our attention and our opinions

I think education is changing, likely for the better in many ways. But there will still be highly regulated industries that require certain credentials, and I think if you want to make those your career, there will be some form of higher education required Re singularity 🤷‍♂️ if we all get UBI and people want to level up with college, I could see it becoming more interest and community/geographic overlap based

college will still have a place for r&d if you're going to college just for the sake of getting an expensive piece of certificate then you could probably skip college. but i think going to a top college is still an amazing way to meet and work with future world changers.

Yeah I’ve always been pretty aware of the fact that there might be better options than college by the time my kids get there (20+ years from now)

Not at all; you just need to think about how they will access good networks of people their age. And tbh college is not necessarily the best way to do this anyway

depending on what you want to study you can learn most of it from o line resources. from my pov (design) if i could go back i would have skipped college and learned everything online. companies are more interested on what you have in your portfolio than a piece of paper.
