Training for my first half marathon. I’ve got about four months. Any advice from experienced runners? Things you wished you knew before you ran your first marathon / half marathon?

Did my first half in September. In trying to fix some issues (ITB pain), I caused other issues (shin splints) and thus lost weeks of training. So, my advice is to take it easy and also add in strength training and recovery. Don't overdo! First half marathon is there to have fun with and complete. :)

Remember to always warm up before your runs and always stretch on a daily basis to avoid injuries. Complementing your training with gym workouts is recommended to build muscle and avoid injuries. Good nutrition and enough sleep are really the key! But most importantly: remember to have fun!

I highly recommend dedicated stretching of psoas muscles bc if not you can easily strain your lower back from the repetition (esp if you also sit a lot for work) I made a video of the 5 min stretch routine that works for me. I start and end every day with it :) It’s very basic but I can send it to you if you want

How long is your longest run at the moment? (Just to understand your starting point)

controversial take - run 5km repeats instead of trying to constantly up the miles (just do longer run 1x/week) Running shorter distances faster and faster builds your lung capacity and ability to run for longer

There are free marathon/HM training plans from Nike etc. Don’t overtrain and get injured, take recovery days/run seriously. Depending on your current fitness, prioritise mileage before pace.

Get some running/accountability partners !! Makes the process much more enjoyable and social. Also, if it’s your first half, depending on your existing running experience, lots of people run-walk it. No shame there. Welcome to the runner’s high addiction 🤣
