imo the main benefit of CDJs is the portability of your sets via USB other than that, a controller / laptop can move the crowd just the same. most sets just come down to loops, tempo shift, beat jumping, and cue points lmk if this is blasphemous

Functionally no difference between the two, just depends which one you know. But if I didn’t at least have a basic knowledge of how to use CDJ then I wouldn’t have been able to play some of the gigs I’ve played. Not every place lets you easily bring your own setup

i haven’t checked replies to see if others believe this is blasphemy, but the usb portability is the #1 reason why i moved to cdjs— i had too many equipment mishaps to not make the switch lol

I think it depends on your style as a DJ. I use vinyl and CDJs in venues, and almost never use loops and cue points, just mixing one track into another. Definitely agree it’s nice to just rock up somewhere with usbs. I do think it’s easy to get sucked into starting at a laptop screen so wouldn’t DJ using one

There’s something about the track search screen being integrated into the media controller itself. Keeps your eyes and hands focussed. After getting used to CDJs, not having to look at a laptop screen feels liberating. Like you can get into a different kind of flow. Not necessarily better but has its strengths.

the portability is a massive win! I was just saying this morning that it doesn’t matter what tools you use to move the crowd, only that you read the room and deliver. Most of the time, the dance floor doesn’t notice the difference.

I would agree with this. I have had fun playing live sets/DJ sets on Ableton, but it takes more setup and you have to bring your laptop every time.

The one thing i like about CDJs is that i can use multiple decks instead of the 2. I still wanna go back to 3 decks however i aint spending a grand for another one ontop of my controllers.
