Signing up for a free account on homestead dot com…and somehow having money to register pw-software dot com. Good times. Fun fact, a company called P+W Software eventually became second to me in SEO and got acquired. All my deviantART inbound links beat ‘em.

I signed up for a hacking forum, made a thread saying I want to become a hacker and someone DMd me saying I should add him on skype. I did so, and he called me. I accepted and he got my IP and location and told it to me; said I need to be careful and to not post stuff like that. I was 13 or so? Guy was pretty chill.

Definitely arguing with siblings over phone v dialup. Netscape. Any webpage splash image taking minutes to render line by line. Being an IRC mod. Ah, kinda miss irc. Used to think that was toxic and now all these modern platforms say hold my rx

Trying to make my schoolwork different to the rest of the class who had Encarta 95 and only managing to find ever more obscure GeoCities pages. Or something like that. It’s hazy and I now realise I didn’t think anything of the internet beyond being another new thing in the world of new things I was growing up in.

oh god my earliest internet memory was actually a failure to internet trying to do something for some encyclopedia program that came on floppy disks(or maybe a CD? unclear memory tbh) i remember it was confusing because I had never used a browser and it tried to open it but then it was just errors i couldn't figure out what was wrong because I did everything the manual told me turns out we didn't have internet lmao i think my mom got us hooked up after that with some free aol trial because "your kid wants to read the extra info the encyclopedia links to online" is some kind of parenting dream lmao

Connecting to French dial-up service ImagiNet on a 14.4/28.8 kbit/s modem circa 1994 (?) and being blown away by how *interactive* everything was, from browsing with NCSA Mosaic (which was like a live version of HyperCard, coming from a Mac!) to seeing people chat in real time on IRC.
