Here’s my hot take for today. Frontend is harder and more time consuming than backend.

Can't agree more! And I've been agreeing for 5 years : https://medium.com/@julien51/front-end-engineering-is-nothing-to-sneer-at-23e70324443c

depends on the app, depends on the scale and depends on the boundary. in average case nowadays probably true, but the most difficult backends are imo harder and more time consuming than the most difficult frontends.

Depends on the app. For example, ChatGPT frontend is not too complex

Do you think front end is generally less valued than back end- in terms of status and compensation?

Not even a hot take; just 100% true. Thankful for your work on the front lines for CC 🫡 😅

Backend: make sure data goes from point A to point B in an efficient manner Frontend: make sure pixels look good on myriad of devices and languages, walk a fine line between familiar and novel, oh and think about how to nudge user to action A then wonder why they choose B and C instead

I feel that FE is very capricious. You're dealing with different environments, faster changing best practices, libraries, frameworks, & tooling, increasingly demanding audiences, and any imperfections will be quickly noticeable. While BE is declarative hence solid once put in place.

I definitely spend more time moving a box around on the screen than I do sending data to and from that box. I'd probably spend as much time as that box trying to get the infrastructure dialed in the way I want but at least I can kick that devops can down the road for future me to get upset about

Frontend feels hard to me due to the nonstop explosion of new ways to componentize, render, style, test, build, bundle, and so forth. We now ping-pong between client and server rendering more than ever with the added developer complexity of RSC. Hopefully partial pre-rendering (PPR) is where we can all agree to stop :)

Frontend is harder to get something good enough, backend is harder to scale effectively.

harder meh. time consuming yes! getting the exact design to match responsivly is the hurdle imo react native is nice, but has 2nd class web support (yes react native web exists, I know) that could theoretically unite it all

As a person who’s a full stack leaning heavily towards frontend, it always baffled me how quickly and reliably I can build backends for my projects, while the UI takes forever to do it right, add the right level of polish, etc.
