Are Channels Still the Future of Farcaster? (🧵) I used to think so. Now? Not so sure. Back in April 2024, spam was everyone’s problem on Farcaster. Then the channel overhaul happened and shifted the spam burden to hosts. If your channel is full of spam, it’s on you: Gate better. Moderate harder. Ban faster. It’s exhausting and most channel hosts have ignored it or automated it, confusing new folks and aggravating old ones who can’t cast into channels freely. Fast forward to April 2025: spammers got smarter. The current model aggressively flags most users as low-value. 80% of casts are orphaned—no replies, no recasts, no likes. Worse, casting into channels doesn’t trigger spam labels, which flipped the whole dynamic and spammers gravitate to casting into some channels hoping for visibility.

These are my questions for all of you: • To gate or not to gate? • Is anyone even posting in channels? • Does anyone scroll them? • Are channels just for farmers (and not the FarmVille kind)? • Can a community survive on a single pinned cast?

The design isn't optimized for channels. The feed without channels can be very generic depending on who you're following. Spammers still spam (or at least post low quality stuff) outside of channels also.

Farcaster channels have become very, very empty. I don't know where people are

To be honest I don’t think it registered to me that channels were already deprioritized to a significant degree, I just assumed casting outside of channels started fairing a little better. Like you, I’m in limbo about it. I alternate between casting in & out of channels. I don’t know how much of a difference it makes. Certain topics I’ve grown accustom to going directly to a channel to cast, when it feels like I’m speaking to a specific audience/group, vs something that may be palatable on a broader level. I recently expressed my own thoughts about my frustrations with channels too. It creates an additional friction point before posting now, since the instructions on their importance have changed over time. I agree with the sentiment expressed about preferring tags, but I’m sure that too has its pros & cons. I just think overall, the public confusion about channels significantly hampers its viability more than anything else at this time.

I hate to be the "what about hashtags?" guy, but I do wonder if *some* of the value of channels could be solved with hashtags or some similar way of adding zero-to-many "category labels" to a cast. Other users could add a label to an existing cast in order to promote it to a particular community that the OP didn't think of. This might eliminate the need for many channels that don't really need to exist. The remaining channels could be a much smaller set of things that really need the structure of gated/managed channels.

Pichi. I'm always attentive to your posts. I think you're a great reference for what's happening on this network, and I really appreciate your dedication to helping others understand certain things. That said, here's my opinion on channels. When I was starting out online, I published on channels in my native language. I worked hard to create quality content that would help others learn or discover tools, apps, features, etc. Overall, the feedback was very poor. On many occasions, I wasted hours of work in vain, and my posts went unseen by anyone, or almost no one. This was due to several things: my visibility was poor (because the content wasn't in English) and the lack of a community, meaning a consistent group of people to interact with. Fed up with all that, I created my own channel, with content in English. Based on three non-negotiable guidelines: (continue 👇)

Channels are a great primitive. The membership vs following distinction made them more confusing imo. They should be revisited at some point.

channels are the way, channel mods just need better tools. working on this - https://quotient-growth-ui.vercel.app/, https://quotient-growth-ui-git-base-builds-pools-projects-21656b7d.vercel.app/ 1) tools to understand and communicate value of channel 2) tools to automate tasks necessary for growth: hiding spam, boosting valuable content, helping members with tasks, rewarding members for advancing channel's goals, etc
