One of the most important books I’ve ever read is ‘The World of Yesterday’ by Stefan Zweig He was born into an empire that crumbled before his eyes. It is a sober reminder that human institutions, however permanent they may seem to us, are susceptible to the disease of ideology and violence.

Fascinating to see how the arts also succumbed to the pressure. Writers and artists not collaborating anymore and outright denying any cultural achievements of their now enemies. Especially the chapter about Ernst Lissauer and his poem Hassgesang gegen England

whoa. Very powerful. I want to add this to my reading list for sure. But yes, so many past empires have crumbled, but when you're in it, living your life, you can't imagine that happening (speaking from living in the US).

I had high expectations for this book but did not manage to finish. Sad that his life ended in a tragedy.
