One of the most important books I’ve ever read is ‘The World of Yesterday’ by Stefan Zweig He was born into an empire that crumbled before his eyes. It is a sober reminder that human institutions, however permanent they may seem to us, are susceptible to the disease of ideology and violence.

whoa. Very powerful. I want to add this to my reading list for sure. But yes, so many past empires have crumbled, but when you're in it, living your life, you can't imagine that happening (speaking from living in the US).
