Welcome to @jasoncrawford.eth! Jason is the founder of The Roots of Progress, a non-profit dedicated to progress studies. In addition, he has served as an advisor for Our World in Data and as a guest lecturer at MIT. His essay, We Need A New Philosophy of Progress, is one of the best arguments for techno-optimism that I've read: https://rootsofprogress.org/we-need-a-new-philosophy-of-progress/ He has agreed to do an AMA for the /books channel as part of the ongoing Silicon Valley Canon course. Reply with your questions. :)

@jasoncrawford.eth How do you think we can shift focus in our money-driven economy, where the pursuit of profit often comes at the expense of morals? Now that AI is at the peak of its momentum, what can we do to prevent it from being used immorally, similar to how modern science enabled the creation of the atomic bomb? In industries like fast food, convenience often compromises quality. I find it absurd how it costs more to just healthy. How can we incentivize people to build technologies that prioritize the betterment of the human experience rather than just convenience and profit?

Hi @jasoncrawford.eth, thanks for taking the time to answer questions. Progress/innovation is one of my favourite concepts to think on, so I'm curious to hear where your head is at: In a world filled with moral panic at the slightest hint of the "new", how can we build enough optimistic momentum to reach any sort of collective critical mass to actually enact global progress to the next form of "enlightenment"? I see the digital renaissance/ownership progressing via blockchain as one path, while progressing AI in parallel for automation of base knowledge work/menial tasks, but where does this leave the average person in 10-20 years? The average knowledge worker? People see such change as a drastically new path from their current one, triggering the panic in the first place, so I'm curious what your strategies/tactics are for helping modify the mass public perception towards a positive one. Any thoughts are much appreciated 🫡

A lot of innovation comes out of a very small number of places where talent and resources have coalesced (Bay Area, Boston area, Shenzhen, …). Do you think this model continues for the next 50 years or will innovation be more distributed? And is it worth trying to create more ecosystems more places?

Hello and thank you for the AMA! Do you believe that people mistake progress that is more or less advancement in entertainment consumption for that of material progress that advances us as a society? Are we going slow when a lot of people think we're progressing fast?

How do you handle the concern about social media clearly having negative effects on a wide range of people and concerns about AI with your roots of progress approach? (Not saying you can't just interested in your thoughts on it)

I think that these days there’s fear of the impact of automation and AI on replacing humans on jobs and society what gives you confidence that technology will ultimately lead to better outcomes for humanity?

You talked about “The 20th century shattered the link between material and moral progress” How do you think we can reconnect these two types of progress in the 21st century, or should they even be linked at all?

Why was the Enlightenment able to spread? Why do you think it resonated with enough people to spread? Do you think there is there anything to learn from this for your philosophy of progress for the 21st century?
