I ask Gates, himself a target of some pretty wild conspiracy theories, what he thinks of the decision taken by Zuckerberg after Trump's election to dump fact-checking in the US on his sites. Gates tells me he's not "that impressed" by how governments or private companies are navigating the boundaries between free speech and truth.

So in the 12th century a Song emperor had to pay a nomad warlord in the north 100k “taels” of silver and 200k bolts of silk a year. He fomented revolt by a vassal warlord to main warlord to take him down. But new guy’s clan took over more territory and the capital and drove the Songs south and they then had to pay 200k taels, 250k bolts of silk. On a shrunken territory/tax base. Moral of the story. I don’t know. I’m not sure there’s one. Be a warlord rather than a Song emperor? The history of China appears to be a history of paying off warlords who then kept coming back for more.

Moving to a third world country puts the global financial system and the importance of self sovereignty into a perspective that would have been impossible for me to have if I had lived my entire life in the United States.

Chris Paik on incentives, capital, systems, and power: "The world has two sides: a for-profit world and a non-profit world. There are entities that are trying to drive profits, and there are entities that are not trying to drive profits (governments, religions). For-profit companies are really good at pushing the world to the way that it will be. They are very bad at being paternalistic. They’ll give people exactly what they want. The non-profit side is really good at pushing the world into how it should be. It’s really good at being paternalistic. We as individual actors depend on the systems to imbue society with paternalism."

Learing NextJs useSession from NextAuth.js is a React hook that helps manage user authentication in a Next.js app. It provides session information, including whether a user is authenticated, their details, and the loading state. This makes it easy to control access to protected pages, redirect unauthenticated users, or display user-specific content dynamically. useSWR (Stale-While-Revalidate) is a data-fetching library that improves performance by caching API responses and automatically revalidating data in the background. It reduces unnecessary API calls, ensures users see the latest data without refreshing, and provides built-in error handling. By using mutate(), SWR allows instant UI updates when data changes, making it perfect for real-time applications.

Great article. Also: > Foundry, Alloy, Reth, Revm, Wagmi and Viem Insane list. Best node, best contract dev tools, best SDK for calling contracts and talking to nodes. It's as if, in web world, react and nodejs were both built by a specific VC. https://www.paradigm.xyz/2025/01/ethereum-acceleration-1
