when funding new wallets, having to distinguish between L1 ETH and Base ETH is totally unacceptable UX. let’s get this abstraction pattern over and done with.

In 2025 I really hope this isn't an issue anymore, though I can imagine it's still confusing for people new to crypto (Admittedly it was an issue for me just last year 😬)

I was thinking the same thing but assume this initial ship is the MVP and if there’s positive signal the Merkle team will use a chain abstracted balance via Socket / ZeroDev or similar going forward

Is it really that "unacceptable" though? If someone doesn't understand what an L2 is they probably won't even notice the tab where you can choose a different network. It's pretty straight forward as far as I am concerned.

The only way I can think this gets solved is when there are low cost fast bridging solutions where the user isn't actually having to move their own funds across, otherwise the distinction needs to be there due to fee differences and chain asset (eg NFT) location differences.
