when funding new wallets, having to distinguish between L1 ETH and Base ETH is totally unacceptable UX. let’s get this abstraction pattern over and done with.

Is it really that "unacceptable" though? If someone doesn't understand what an L2 is they probably won't even notice the tab where you can choose a different network. It's pretty straight forward as far as I am concerned.

Yeah I need eth on base to buy bad NFTs and poorly performing meme coins and ETH on mainnet to pay my exorbitant gas fees
