Speaking fluent English is such a privilege in the present day. King of languages. I speak a few other languages but I can’t say any of them are nearly as useful. Persian would’ve been useful 200 years ago but now it’s basically something to impress people at parties. The fact that almost everyone in Europe seems to speak English has also demotivated me from learning other European languages even though some are beautiful on their own terms. I can understand French I just don’t feel a pressing need to finish studying it.

I wish I'd learned English sooner so I could speak it fluently. I had German and English at school and Spanish at university. As a result, I don't speak any of them fluently, except russian and Ukrainian.

Learning other language mechanics has one advantage: See the world through different lenses. No need to be fluent, and source of innovative thinking. E.g. Japanese relies on way fewer sounds like, say, English (~100 times fewer), so fewer words. Practice of the language relies a lot on context and situations to interpret the same words. Powerful, error prone for heretics. Written language has also formal techniques to “compress” text.

Being fluent in English does offer many opportunities, especially in an international environment. While other languages can be beautiful and culturally enriching, their practical value may be inferior to English in today's world. Understanding French is already a huge achievement, and you may want to return to it if you find the motivation or interest to learn it further.

It’s true, English feels like a universal key nowadays. While other languages have their beauty, the practicality of English makes it hard to prioritize learning more. Still, there’s something special about being able to connect with different cultures through language!

I really regret not continuing with Spanish out of high school and into college. My partner is fluent and I admire her ability to converse any time we travel down south.

💯 agreed 👍 Our native language should have be the best but English language make other languages feel less since it is highly recognized in a lot of places even tho it is not the most popular language

I find it interesting because I've always heard English is the toughest to learn. I speak English natively, but when I learned Spanish, I remember thinking "Wow, this makes a lot more sense."
