I respect this take — on balance I read much more nonfiction than fiction. But I will say that some of the most powerful and lasting lessons I’ve ever taken from reading have been from fiction books. The human mind is structured to understand and retain concepts through stories, and a well-told story even if fictional, can sometimes teach lessons about the real world more powerfully than just getting the raw information.

The thing to keep in mind is that nothing is fiction - this is just a way of saying that "everything is a remix". No character, plot or metaphor is made-up. Everything springs from the life experience (real or imagined) of the author. This would get philosophical quickly, but you know what I mean The gift of good fiction writers is to take their life, ideas and real people they know and turn them into something new, more than the sum of their part @tldr I have a feeling you have something to contribute here

Tbh I think it’s a pretty bad take, and it seems like he thinks it’s something to be proud of? Like, why bother with an aesthetic experience at all? It’s like only ever watching documentaries. Maybe the odd biopic. Might as well throw out poetry while he’s at it. The experience itself is the point. Any ‘learning’ is secondary, and I do feel bad for him if it’s the only experience he’s able to access through reading. I also know people who are unable to enjoy music, and I feel for them. They’re really missing out.

Stories that tap into deep emotional conflict represent an untold cultural history of society in the time and place they represent, and those especially leave a lasting imprint. Didnt realize the power this has until I read about Bosnia and the wars. Had read history books on it. But reading Hemon, Galloway and Andric (pre-war), made it real and connected to it.

Respect both of these takes. Can make strong arguments for each one. For a long while I was reading mostly non-fiction. At some point during the pandemic I started shifting towards more fiction which has continued but maybe evened out close to 60/40 in favor of fiction. Wonder if there’s been any surveys/studies about reading habits relative to the pandemic. Anecdotally, I’ve heard a lot of people say they started reading more fiction and/or less non-fiction since 2020, largely due to the escapism fiction provides. Also, Murtaza, check out /booksuggestions run by @inceptionally. It’s not as overrun by bots as this channel

I enjoy some fiction because it lets us explore topics or ideas and push our boundaries in thinking. It’s why I love SciFi. Like you said, some of the most profound or thought provoking ideas that I have had have been from fiction.
