I respect this take — on balance I read much more nonfiction than fiction. But I will say that some of the most powerful and lasting lessons I’ve ever taken from reading have been from fiction books. The human mind is structured to understand and retain concepts through stories, and a well-told story even if fictional, can sometimes teach lessons about the real world more powerfully than just getting the raw information.

Stories that tap into deep emotional conflict represent an untold cultural history of society in the time and place they represent, and those especially leave a lasting imprint. Didnt realize the power this has until I read about Bosnia and the wars. Had read history books on it. But reading Hemon, Galloway and Andric (pre-war), made it real and connected to it.
