I respect this take — on balance I read much more nonfiction than fiction. But I will say that some of the most powerful and lasting lessons I’ve ever taken from reading have been from fiction books. The human mind is structured to understand and retain concepts through stories, and a well-told story even if fictional, can sometimes teach lessons about the real world more powerfully than just getting the raw information.

Tbh I think it’s a pretty bad take, and it seems like he thinks it’s something to be proud of? Like, why bother with an aesthetic experience at all? It’s like only ever watching documentaries. Maybe the odd biopic. Might as well throw out poetry while he’s at it. The experience itself is the point. Any ‘learning’ is secondary, and I do feel bad for him if it’s the only experience he’s able to access through reading. I also know people who are unable to enjoy music, and I feel for them. They’re really missing out.

You’re not wrong at all. Learning is about absorption not downloading information
