I recently had a discussion with the CEO of a headphone company who wants to do some kind of web3 rewards program. I'm wondering if people here have any thoughts about companies introducing web3 features that probably aren't completely necessary?

Current opinion - unnecessary. Although I am curious about it. What would be the direct benefit to the users?

I think of it less as necessary v not, and more like a channel play (early betting on e-commerce or social) — don’t need to do it, but you could regret missing out. I’d say not worth it unless leadership sees it as a long term bet with some short term wins along the way.

Why (apart from hype/target buyer persona) didn’t they want to do a traditional off-chain rewards program?

There’s benefits for traditional businesses to introduce web3 rewards. But their objectives must be clear. And understand users will likely be crypto native (usually is why they want to do it). Folks outside crypto could care less about NFTs and signing in with wallets. Tho you could strategically work around this.

So without a sort of network effect, they are better off with regular web-nothing rewards. But, the play that would work is if the rewards were somehow part of a broader positive-sum ecosystem. Headphone purchase gives you an NFT that comes with free 3 month membership of Tidal, or 10$ off concert tickets.

When these things happen we try to create a Brand3 Strategy around your company. It's about analyzing your brand purpose to see how Web3 technology can be beneficial to your product, service and/or user. It is also necessary to go step by step to go down this path and offer training to all departments…

I’m immediately reminded of my recent foray into Starbucks Odyssey out of perverse curiosity. I don’t know which part is more disingenuous: calling it “web3” (BuT pOlyGoN!!1) or “rewards”… “So preoccupied with whether or not we could, we didn’t ask if they should…” type beat.

This would serve well as a marketing press release and nothing else. Like when car cos issued NFTs with their cars.

spent a few months digging into web3 reward programs and platforms that enable this i think the main value add is if the points are actually erc-20s that people could exchange for fiat or at other partnered companies requires building a network to accept the token + potential erc-20 considered a security
