Seeing many Gen Z friends early 20s who had ‘detached irony’ beaten so hard into them as a personality trait, that they lack the confidence and now even the ability to think uniquely about what they enjoy, the person they want to be, and the kind of work they want to do. The courage to commit to a choice.

I certainly haven’t figured this out either, but I have committed to some things & borne rewards for that in my career (not quite socially yet). Lots of my friends really struggling to find good jobs and avenues for self expression. I guess this is to be expected for some people in their 20s anyway. ‘Lost’ doesn’t describe quite how they look to me. ‘Directionless’ is close.

I love your framing that “courage” is the opposite or antidote to the ironic postmodern sneer. Yes! Courage Camile. 🫵 YOU are the anchor for your own conviction. That doesn’t make it easy…but does bring it back within striking distance of “possible.”

I think my millennial version of this was sincerely believing I could do anything with my life…and then never being able to choose. Sort of an analysis paralysis of not wanting to commit to the wrong choice. Courage is key

cynicism is mistaken for cool by every generation, some never grow out of it, but many will, still a battle for me.

This generation gets all of the cool names. Detached irony, what in the actual fuck is that? 😂 In either case, I blame it on the internet. It’s no coincidence that all of this craziness started right around the time full HTML browsers were available on cellphones and you no longer needed to stay tethered to a PC to share your feelings with the world.
