While I was a VC for 6 years, I spent a lot of time meeting with founders. I saw a LOT of burnout that wasn't always talked about publicly One takeaway for me going into founding a company was even though the hours are really long, I make sure to never skip taking care of my mental and physical health (or ever feel guilty about it) in order to maintain long term pace. This is what works for me e.g. no matter how chaotic things get, I make sure to do a daily 15 min walk minimum, take 2-3 fitness classes per week, and make sure every week I'm fitting in some things that make me happy (e.g. seeing family/friends, eating good food, etc). Still working on improving my sleep though

How do you not feel guilty about it? This is what makes it hard for me currently. Since I have 2 jobs, fitting in things that makes me happy/sane feels like i should’ve just got more shifts. Idk if it makes sense cause Idk how to express it lol. But yeah even if I know this might lead to burnout soon, i can’t seem to relax cause I always think that I could’ve just got more shifts rather than resting or doing other things

100% agree. we often forget that quality is not quantity. the best solutions come to me when I’m doing something completely different from my daily “working on my startup” routine. think outside the box, we should step outside this box.

I agree with you. I do and don't do it, so I am reminded of the importance of taking care of my health on an ongoing basis.

I guess the concerns for mental health only now are starting to become significant and more and more studies try to convince people that, even though we act like machines, we are not. SciComm has also evolved a lot so it could help create new trends (such as the 4 day work week) that can spread to more countries, even undeveloped ones. Bad thing? founders don't have 4 days of work weekly, they have 7. But I still think it's a good starting point Said that, I also find sleep regulation the hardest part. I'm not a big founder, but even when I'm tired, I don't want to lose anything and I sure can't fit the things I want to do in 24h. So the thing i sacrifice is sleep. I hope you can regulate your sleep asap though

I once heard 'in order to breathe out you gotta breathe in'. Starts are like a long race with sprouts of breathing out hard. It only makes sense. Also I'm not a bot even though this response sounds like a bot.

Taking care of yourself is definitely the way to go, but don't you/founders feel extremely guilty for spending/wasting time on other things that could be spent on building regardless of being burnt out? How does one get out of this guilt?

Your self-care routine is so on point! Finding that balance is crucial for long-term success and well-being. Running a company is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep prioritizing your health and happiness—you’re setting the best example for other founders. Sleep is tough, but even little improvements make a difference! 🌟
