What does someone stand to lose without muscle mass? Was asked this and was taken aback. Curious what your take is

Hi keccers As a physical therapist yknow i see a lot of cases like this so i just want to say it's totally more than just losing strength. It affects balance, mobility, and even posture. Plus patients metabolism usually also takes a hit, making it easier to gain fat and harder to burn their energy. Not to mention the risk of injury goes up since our body's muscles help support the skeleton and joints. And, over time, it can affect overall health, like bone density and cardiovascular health. Honestly soo much more things. Its crazy how important it is, right? For you what was your take when you first heard it?"

Is the question "what do I lose if I have less muscular mass" or "what do people do to not lose muscular mass"?

Everyone has a little bit and it does its part with basic stability and everyday life As you age and losing muscle mass accelerates, I’d expect that’s when its most important to maintain and preserve it for as long as possible

Without muscle mass, one loses strength, slows metabolism, weakens bones, and increases injury risk.

Disease prevention, longevity and quality of living are the main points that come to mind I like the way that Dr. Gabrielle Lyon presents it (not that I agree or follow 100%) but she's one side of a scientific approach to answering this question: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1vlsEwI0Nrx1hoiNDvA479?si=c911623474234446

Good question Recently lost a patient he had severe weight loss and among other things before we lost him he couldn’t work because of the amount of muscle mass he had lost he literally just bones Muscle mass have a lot more importance - mobility, balance and coordination strength - helps maintain BMR to an extent - posture - joint health the list goes on
